Kinyingarra is the Jandai word – our language - for Oyster. Kinyingarra is a shellfish gathered on Quandamooka Country and a food source for our people found during the summer months. The shells that are discarded are exposed to the elements and are weathered down by the wind and rain.

Over many years, the sharp edges are smoothed and the layers beneath revealed, leaving behind patterns and evidence that our people have gathered in that space forever. There are many deposits across the island where remnants of those shells remain and that space carries the memories of our people.

This is handprinted on linen in studio on Minjerribah North Stradbroke Island by Delvene Cockatoo-Collins.
